Negotiation tactics

When we are going to do something a little bit different than normal, I usually try to prep my kids in advance. That way they sort of know what is coming, and hopefully we can avoid any ‘unexpected tantrums’.

Today I told Andrew that we were going to visit his buddy Wesley in Sacramento tomorrow – and that it would be a long drive, but once we got there it would be fun.

After a lot of discussion about what we would be doing once we got there… bubbles, sweeping, playing with trucks, getting dirty in the mud…. he asked,

Can we go see Wesley now?

I told him no, but that we could go tomorrow after breakfast.

He then said, can we eat breakfast now?

Hummm… he is getting pretty smart. I might be on the losing end of this discussion.

So I explained, no, first you have to go to bed, and then we eat our breakfast, and then we can go see Wesley.

He thought about it for a moment, but then responded… can I go to sleep now?

Hummmmm… It is 5:30. He goes to bed at 7:30. He NEVER wants to go to bed at ANY time.

Off to bed you go little one! Mommy gets an extra 2 hours to herself tonight!

Thank you Wesley!
